Net Censorship
Last Updated: March 6, 2006In the words of the OpenNet Initiative, "Iran has adopted one of the world's most substantial Internet censorship regimes." The state uses the most sophisticated tools and techniques to stamp out free expression and access to information on the Internet, censoring critical political, religious, and social content, as well as sex-related sites, whether general gay-themed sites or pornography. The regime's greatest efforts, however, are spent in an effort to stamp out local resistance by focusing on personal weblogs, especially those written in Farsi. While censoring other local websites with varying levels of commitment, the state has successfully blocked 98% of Farsi-language blogs.
